DEVOTIONAL: “SURRENDERING YOUR FUTURE”
"So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever." 2 Corinthians 4:18
Over the past couple days, we've looked at surrendering our time and our past; today we end the week with a look at the future.
If you've ever learned to ride a bike, you might have been told to look ahead of you to where you're going, rather than down. This will help ensure you will not waver or swerve. This is a good strategy for life… except for the fact that our futures are this great unknown we either wait for with anticipation or trepidation! We often do not know where we are going, especially since many of us have experienced the maxim "Man plans, and God laughs."
So, how are we to "look ahead" if we don't know what tomorrow holds? Second Corinthians 4:18 teaches that our look to the future can be set simply by "fixing our gaze on things that cannot be seen.” In other words, focus on the good things God has promised in the Bible. The Apostle Paul continues on in the next chapter of 2 Corinthians that the future holds for us "an eternal house in heaven…[being] clothed in our heavenly dwelling." If we can fix our eyes on our future heavenly home (Colossians 3:1-2), perhaps we will see some kingdom work done here on earth as we live out our tomorrows.
Hopefully, there are a good many years between your present and your future in heaven with God. But if you have seen and tasted that God has been good (your past), and that He is taking care of your daily bread (today), then you can trust Him with whatever your future holds.
Lord, help me surrender my future (and the futures of my loved ones) into Your hands as I look toward the heavenly home You've secured for me through Your Son’s sacrifice and resurrection.
We will be fasting from food (whether one meal, two meals, or the whole day – your choice) as a church family TOMORROW, Monday, January 8.
