DEVOTIONAL: “SURRENDERING YOUR HEART (EMOTIONS)”
by Jacob Epley

A few years ago, I wrote a song we've sung as a church family called All In Your Hands. It was birthed out of an anxious, fretful, sleepless night. As we continue on our journey of surrender, let's explore the act of yielding one of the most intricate and delicate facets of our being—our hearts, the very seat of our emotions—into the hands of our Father who loves us.

In Proverbs 4:23, Solomon imparts a timeless truth: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." The ebb and flow of joy, sorrow, and every emotion in between, plays a pivotal role in shaping our thoughts and actions. So, how can we biblically surrender our hearts to God?

Consider the Psalms, where David, a man after God's own heart, poured out a kaleidoscope of emotions before the Lord. David's vulnerability teaches us that surrendering our hearts means being real with God, allowing Him to navigate the complex terrain of our feelings.

Therefore, surrendering your heart to God is not a call to build walls, but to entrust Him as Keeper of your emotions. Heart surrender isn’t to suppress your emotions, but to bring them into alignment with God's truth. The Apostle Paul offers this guidance to the Church in Philippi:

"Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:6-7)

Imagine your heart as a painter's palette, each emotion a color brushed onto the canvas of your life. Surrendering to God means inviting Him, the Great Artist, to create a masterpiece of grace, truth, love, and joy amidst the chaotic complexity of your feelings. In Psalm 139:23-24, David prays,

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends You, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” Psalm 139:23-24

Let this also be our prayer as we surrender our hearts to Him.

PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, help me to be honest about my emotions, especially with You, but let me not be ruled by my emotions. Rather, as I navigate the emotional mountains and valleys of life, let my heart to be ruled by Your Spirit and guarded by Your peace. In Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

Memorize Colossians 3:15
"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful."
