Sunday, Jan 21 - Surrendering Continually

TODAY’S READING:
Psalm 63:1-8

DEVOTIONAL: “SURRENDERING CONTINUALLY”
by Erin Bird

“Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
and what is the place of my rest?
All these things my hand has made,
and so all these things came to be,"
declares the Lord.
“But this is the one to whom I will look:
he who is humble and contrite in spirit
and trembles at my word.” (Isaiah 66:1-2)

Welcome to the final day of our church-wide spiritual journey! We spent the first twenty days of 2024 together surrendering our lives, our egos, our desires, our relationships, our time… our everything!… to God.

But what should we do on this twenty-first day?

First, we need to celebrate! If you experienced a spiritual breakthrough, or felt a closeness to God, or heard from God that led to changes leading to Christlikeness, or even saw God working in the life of someone else within the Riverwood family, you need to worship God, celebrating what He did in and through you and/or others.

Second, you need to keep going! The purpose of these 21 Days wasn’t to fulfill a duty or simply have a short-term spiritual experience, but to help build into you the inner posture of a Jesus-follower who is “humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at [His] word.”

So as we close this journey in prayer, let us take a moment to celebrate, as well as ask His Spirit to empower us to continue with a heart quick to surrender to His will, ways, and word.

PRAYER:
Precious Heavenly Father, thank You for these past 21 Days. Thank You for the work you did in me, as well as in my Riverwood family. Thank You, also, that even though this spiritual journey is coming to an end, Your work in my life does not, for as You say in Philippians 2:13, it is You who works in me, both to will and to work for Your good pleasure.

But Father, I don’t want to stop surrendering! Help me be like Christ, who surrendered to death on a cross for my sake, by surrendering to Your will, Your ways, and Your word each and every day. On the days I don’t surrender, please open my eyes to my sin, so I might be quick to confess. Give me the strength for each day to live for your glory, knowing that the surrendered life is the joy-filled life.

I love you, Lord! Thank you for all you’ve done and will continue to do. And it is in the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
