This week, we continue our series through the four Messianic titles in Isaiah 9:6. Here is verse 6 as a reminder:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

We’ve already looked at Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. So let’s take a look at title #3: “Everlasting Father.”

Baby Daddy

In our culture, some unwed mothers call the father of their child their “baby daddy.” That’s not what I am talking about in this post!

Jesus was the real Baby Daddy. As an infant, He was the Everlasting Father. How so?

Well, let me ask you: what does a good father do? He loves and cares for his children.

As Jesus grew, this is exactly what He did, because it was who He was. Jesus Himself said,

“Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.”
(John 5:19)

Jesus, even though He was God the Son, acted like a good father to us, teaching us, caring for us, and even disciplining us when necessary. He did exactly as His Father does because Jesus was One with God the Father. After all, He was the visible image of the invisible God.

While it may be mind-blowing to think of a baby being our “Father” somehow, it should also lead us to worship. Because this baby that needed care from his earthly daddy grew up to care for us more than we could ever imagine, ultimately dying for us so that we might live.

So let us worship Immanuel, God with us, the Everlasting Father.
