Love (Advent #4)

Sermon Synopsis

As we journey through the fourth week of Advent, our focus shifts to the profound and transformative concept of love. Erin, our lead pastor, guides us through an exploration of biblical love, drawing from First John 4:7-12. This passage not only illuminates the essence of love but also challenges us to embody it in our daily lives.

Understanding Biblical Love

Erin begins by addressing the cultural use of the word "love," which often carries various meanings and connotations. In contrast, biblical love is described as a calling, a person, an action, and a non-negotiable choice. This multifaceted understanding of love is crucial for Christians, as it forms the foundation of our faith and our relationship with God.

Love as a Calling

Erin shares a personal anecdote about his mission trip to Venezuela, where he spoke at a missions conference. This experience highlighted the significance of being called by God, a concept that resonates deeply within Christian circles. Erin emphasizes that everyone is called to love, regardless of their specific mission or vocation. This calling is not just a declaration but requires action, much like an artist who must create to fulfill their calling.

Love as a Person

Erin explains that love is not just an abstract concept but is embodied in the person of God. God defines personhood through personality, will, and intellect, and He is the ultimate person who gave us our personhood. This understanding is crucial because it reminds us that God is the very definition of love. By refusing to love, we are essentially refusing to be like God.

Love in Action

One of the most powerful aspects of Erin's message is the emphasis on love as an action. He reassures us that God's love was made manifest through the sending of His only Son, Jesus Christ, so that we might live through Him. The incarnation of Jesus is the ultimate evidence of God's love, and His sacrifice on the cross further demonstrates this love in action. Erin reminds us that Jesus' death was for us, out of love, and that Easter serves as further proof of this divine love.

Love as a Choice

Erin also discusses the challenging aspect of love as a choice. Loving others can be easy when we receive love in return, but it becomes much harder when there is no reciprocation. Despite these difficulties, we are called to love unconditionally, just as God loved us first. This love is generous and unconditional, and we are urged to extend it to others, regardless of their values, economic status, or political views.

Living Out Love

In conclusion, Erin calls on us to recognize Jesus as God's gift this Christmas and to live out His love in our actions. By loving like Jesus, we can radically change the world and show others God's love. Erin prays for the ability to live out love-filled lives through the Holy Spirit, acknowledging the challenges but seeking God's help to overcome them.

As we reflect on Erin's message, let us strive to embody the true meaning of love in our lives. This Advent season, may we be inspired to love unconditionally, just as God loves us.
