The inside distractions in our lives are even more insidious than violent external threats. External threats can actually motivate you. Internal distractions, however, tend to demotivate you completely and fracture and/or break you from the inside.
The people of Isreal started complaining about the work and about their need for grain during a famine. The Jewish people with grain kept raising the prices higher and higher - making it unaffordable. When the less fortunate Jewish people couldn't pay for their grain, their children were taken away into slavery.
This infuriated Nehemiah as it was a repeat of what the Jewish people were doing prior to Babylon destroying them earlier. This was a massive distraction internally.
