Psalm 121 (Summer of Psalms #1)

Sermon Synopsis

Psalm 121 is a “Psalm of Ascent”

What is the greatest fear you are facing right now?

  • Financial?
  • Grades?
  • Safety?

— Where do I go for help?

  1. The creator is our helper (vs 1-2) - I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
    1. Similar to hiking, the best views are found by looking up.
    2. We have so many ways to gain information (internet, podcasts, books, etc) but the Psalmist tells us that our help should come from the Lord, the creator.
  2. God is our protector (vs 3-6) - He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
    1. Imagine if God’s “customer service” was only available during working hours each weekday. Verse 6 reminds us that God is here for us day & night.
    2. God will not allow anything to happen to us that is not intended for His good. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that “God’s ways are higher than our ways”
  3. God will keep you and me from evil (vs 7-8) - The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
