Revealed (Putting the Bible In Its Place #4)

Sermon Synopsis

What is the purpose of school? It’s not to make friends, to get good grades, or to be able to regurgitate facts. The purpose of school is to learn. It’s essential to know the purpose of what you’re involved in. This is also true of scripture. Many people seem not to understand the purpose of the Bible.

Why did God give us the Scriptures? The Bible is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness, but those are not the primary purposes of the Bible.

As good as the Bible is for teaching, its purpose is much greater. Similarly, even though the Bible is good for correction (improving, not discipline), that is not a primary purpose of the Bible. The Bible is also for training, but that isn’t the primary purpose. Instead, the primary purpose is found in verse 17, and that purpose is “that the man (or woman) of God may be complete.”

Who is the only perfect and complete person in all of human history? Christ was. Through this, we can conclude that the purpose of scripture is to help us be like Christ. Even Jesus tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 that he died for our sins in “accordance with the Scriptures.”

The Scriptures are Not…
… first and foremost about you. The Scriptures are for us, but they are about Jesus.
… God. The purpose is to reveal Christ in us - not replace Christ. It is through the Scriptures that we see Jesus.

The Scriptures reveal Jesus to us and in us
