Psalm 121 is a “Psalm of Ascent”
What is the greatest fear you are facing right now?
— Where do I go for help?
- The creator is our helper (vs 1-2) - I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
- Similar to hiking, the best views are found by looking up.
- We have so many ways to gain information (internet, podcasts, books, etc) but the Psalmist tells us that our help should come from the Lord, the creator.
- God is our protector (vs 3-6) - He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
- Imagine if God’s “customer service” was only available during working hours each weekday. Verse 6 reminds us that God is here for us day & night.
- God will not allow anything to happen to us that is not intended for His good. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us that “God’s ways are higher than our ways”
- God will keep you and me from evil (vs 7-8) - The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
